Award for song of the year to deliver a message to the world. Earlier in the day, the Wu had lost rap album of the year to Diddy, and he was a little upset for various reasons. This moment ended up giving birth to one of Hip Hop’s most famous speeches:

“I went and bought me an outfit today that costed a lot of money, today

You know what I mean, because I figured that Wu-Tang was gonna win

I don't know how y'all see it, but when it comes to the children, Wu-Tang is for the children, we teach the children

You know what I mean, Puffy is good but WU-TANG IS THE BEST!

Okay, I want y'all to know that this is ODB and I LOVE YOU ALL, Peace!"

This is where the famous phrase “Wu-Tang is for the children” was born.

To continue celebrating the undeniable legacy of one of Hip Hop’s most unique voices, we partnered with the Ol’ Dirty Bastard estate and photographer Gary Hershorn to tell the story of this infamous moment at the 1998 Grammys on a 33 HI.
